U.S. News 的大学排名权威度很高，是很多学生择校的重要参考。过去30多年，哥伦比亚大学的排名稳步上升，从1988年的全美18名上升到近年的第4、第3，去年更是名列第2、仅次于普林斯顿。

但是，今年2月，哥大数学系教授 Michael Thaddeus 在哥大数学系官网发表长文分析，质疑哥大提供给 U.S. News 的数据不真实：
- 比如哥大声称「82.5%」的本科课堂是20人以下的小班，而 Michael 的分析称真实数据应该在 62.7%-66.9%之间，不可能有82.5%那么高。
- 又如哥大称教职员 100% 获得博士或终端学位，比例超过竞争对手普林斯顿（94%）、MIT（91%）、哈佛（91%）、耶鲁（93%），而 Michael 教授的统计认为，即使按照宽松的标准，哥大的这一比例最高也才 96%，不可能是 100%。
作为回应，哥大教务处（Office of the Provost）6月30日宣布，将检查其之前向 U.S. News 提供数据的流程，并且哥大从今年开始将和其他很多知名大学一样，参加美国高等教育界自发的「通用统计数据」（Common Data Set）计划，目前已公开披露其本科教育的两类统计数据。在9月9日的第二份声明中，哥大教务处承认此前提供给 U.S. News 的信息采用了过时、不正确的方式（outdated and/or incorrect methodologies）。
9月12日，U.S. News 发布了最新的大学排名，哥大从去年的全美第2大跌至第18位（与它在1988年的排名相同）。在接受卫报采访时，Michael 教授表示不相信哥大此前提供给 U.S. News 的数据错误「是无心之失」（I find it very difficult to believe the errors were honest and inadvertent at this point）。
