今天有读者问，母亲打算来美国，「护照有效期要比预计离美时间长出六个月以上吗？」
答：是的。美国海关与边境保护局（US CBP）要求访客的护照有效期比预定停留期限长6个月；比如，你3/1来美国、预计9/1离开（停留6个月），那么你的护照有效期应该至少到明年的3/1。如果你的护照有效期不够，CBP 可能会相应缩短你的停留期限 —— 比如说，你的护照只有8个月的有效期，那么入境的时候 CBP 可能只会给你（8-6）= 2个月的停留期。
其实有很多国家（和地区）可以免除这个要求的限制，这些国家称为「Six Month Club」（六个月俱乐部），包括台湾、香港、澳门，然而中国大陆（PRC 护照）并不在此列。也就是说，港澳台护照，入境美国并没有「必须超出停留期6个月」的限制，而中国大陆护照则有此限制。
