您好 Derek Yang, 我于今日收到母亲 b2 延期申请的 approval notice (i-797a )，背面在有关「form i-94 attachment」中提到「在离开美国时，必须向在机场、边境或海关的官员上交 i-94」。原文: 「When you leave the United States, you must turn in the right half of your i-94 (kept in your passport) to the officials at the airport, border or seaport. If you do not do so, it may delay your entry into the United States in the future.」我的疑问在于：离境时，哪里会有海关？在哪里上交新的 i-94?

I-94 的基本知识

I-94 是入境／离境表格，决定了你在美国的合法身份（legal status）。出入境的时候，美国海关和边境保护局（USCBP）会发放及回收 I-94 表格，记录你出入境的时间。若你在美国境内申请延期或转换身份等，美国公民及移民服务局（USCIS）批准之后会给你新的 I-94 表格。

从 2013 下半年开始（如果我没记错的话），I-94 表格实施了电子化：

如果你乘坐商业航班或轮船，航空／轮船公司会将登机信息提前发给 USCBP，从而生成电子 I-94 记录。
如果你从陆路出入境，比如自驾车，USCBP 无法提前收到你的出入境信息，因此仍然使用纸质 I-94 记录。
如果你乘坐私人飞机或游艇出入境，USCBP 仍然可能需要纸质的 I-94 记录。

对于绝大部分中国公民来说，在中美之间往返，已经多年没有在护照上有 I-94 小白纸记录了。但是，若申请延期，USCIS 批准之后在 I-797 Approval Notice 左下角会有新的 I-94 日期，这是你新的 legal status 。 USCBP 和 USCIS 是两个不同的政府部门，USCIS 给你的新 I-94 通常并不会在 USCBP 的 I-94 官网自动更新。

回到这位读者的问题：正常来说，若你坐商业飞机或轮船离境（私人飞机或游艇除外），并不需要上缴 I-94 记录。 USCBP 官网的问答也是这么说的：

I forgot to turn in my I-94 when I left the U.S., what should I do?
[…] If you departed by a commercial air or sea carrier (airlines or cruise ships), your departure from the U.S. can be independently verified, and it is not necessary to take any further action, although holding on to your outbound (from the U.S.) boarding pass – if you still have it – can help facilitate your reentry next time you come back to the United States.
If you departed by land, private vessel or private plane, you will need to take steps to correct the record. If you do not validate your timely departure from the United States, or, if you cannot reasonably prove you departed within the time frame given to you when you entered, the next time you apply for admission to the U.S., Customs and Border Protection (CBP) may conclude you remained in the U.S. beyond your authorized stay. If this happens, your visa may be subject to cancellation or you may be returned immediately to your foreign point of origin.

很多读者参照本站的教程申请过延期，包括我自己也有亲友延期成功在美国停留超过 6 个月，之后顺利离境又再次入境，目前我还没听任何人说因为没有在离境时上缴 USCIS 批准的新 I-94 记录而产生麻烦。

不过，如果你不放心的话：

在机场问问工作人员，看是否有 USCBP 官员值班。国际机场应该有 USCBP 办公室，但并不一定 7×24 。
保留登机牌和 I-797 批准记录，下次入境时随身携带，以防 USCBP 对你上次离境的时间和身份有疑问。

最后，若机场没有 USCBP 官员，根据 USCBP 说明 ^[来源]，你可以把 I-94 记录寄给他们，地址如下。
